Dorothy Allison is an American writer, who was born in 1949 to poverty in Greenville, South Carolina. She now lives in California with her partner and adopted child. Her well-known works include her first novel and national best-seller, Bastard Out of Carolina, the novel, Cavedweller, and a book of autobiographical performance pieces, Two or Three Things I Know for Sure.

Allison joined the women's movement in the early 1970s and attributes the "militant feminists" who encouraged her for her decision to write.

Themes in Allison's work include class struggle, child and sexual abuse, women, lesbianism, feminism, and family. She has won numerous awards, and her novel Bastard Out of California was a finalist for the 1992 National Book Award.

Allison is also dedicated to small press publishing, safer sex, and is active in feminist and lesbian communities.
