Caleb Carr (born August 2, 1955) is an American novelist and noted military historian. He was born in New York City, achieved a degree in history, and is the author of The Devil Soldier, The Alienist, The Angel of Darkness, Casing the Promised Land, Killing Time, The Italian Secretary, and The Lessons of Terror among others.
He currently resides in upstate New York on a farm estate called "Misery Mountain" in Berlin, NY (Rensselaer County). He teaches military history at Bard College. He was a close friend and confidant of historian James Chace.
He ran as an independant for the Rensselaer County Legislature in 2005, but was narrowly defeated.
His father is Lucien Carr, a former UPI editor and early Beat generation figure.
