Wikipedia-Article "Rosamunde Pilcher"

Rosamunde Pilcher OBE (born 22 September 1924 in Lelant,Cornwall, United Kingdom) is a British novelist.

Rosamunde Pilcher has been writing since she was fifteen. After finishing school she went to work as a secretary for the navy in 1942 and joined the Women´s Royal Naval Service. Later she began working for the foreign ministry.

1946 she married Graham Pilcher and moved to Dundee, Scotland, where she is living today. Besides being a housewife and mother of four children she writes short stories and love stories for women's magazines at her kitchen table using the pen name Jane Fraser. At the beginning writing was a refuge from her daily live. She claims that writing saved her marriage. The real breakthrough in her career came in 1987 when already at the age of 63 she wrote the family saga The Shell-Seekers. Since then her books have made her one of the more successful contemporary female authors.

Her books are especially popular in Germany due to the fact that national TV station ZDF-Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen has produced nearly 40 of her stories for TV. These TV Films are some of the most popular programmes on ZDF. Both Pilcher and ZDF programme director Dr. Claus Beling were awarded the British Tourism Award in 2002 for the positive effect the books and the TV versions had on tourism.

Pilcher was created an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) in 2002.
