She is the daughter of Janet Ellis, a former Blue Peter presenter. This led to Sophie appearing on the programme as a child.
After starting out with indie band theaudience, she released her first single without the band in 2000. Entitled "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)", the single (a collaboration with Italian DJ Spiller) entered the charts at number one, just beating Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and therefore ensuring a media frenzy. Her debut album, Read My Lips appeared a year later and spawned four top 20 hit singles (including 3 top threes). Her second album, Shoot from the Hip was released in 2003 and was not as commercially successful, reaching number 19 in the official charts, yet it still contained two further top 10 singles. Since then, Sophie has taken time out from her musical career to take care of her first-born baby, Sonny, with boyfriend Richard Jones. In 2004 she announced she was working on a third album. Exactly when this will be released is unclear, but what is known is that she is currently working with Fred Schneider of The B-52s to create a fun dance/party album, with an expected release date toward the end of the year, and presumably in time for Australian summer. In early 2005, she guested on a track by the duo Busface entitled Circles (Just My Good Time).
There is some confusion whether her double-barrelled name is hyphenated or not. Her official website's banner gives it as hyphenated. It is a combination of her parents' surnames.
She has 2 cats, Kenickie & Rizzo. She adopted them from The Mayhew Animal Home
