Wikipedia-Article "LagNet"

LagNet was formed in 1997 by a group of ZaNet Internet Relay Chat users looking to create an alternative South African IRC Network. What was initially an experiment has grown to become a popular South African IRC Network.

The name LagNet was initially intended as a play on the network term 'lag.'

From The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing (09 FEB 02): netlag n. [IRC, MUD] A condition that occurs when the delays in the {IRC} network or on a {MUD} become severe enough that servers briefly lose and then reestablish contact, causing messages to be delivered in bursts, often with delays of up to a minute.

The initial experimental LagNet network had slow response and frequent server splits, hence the name. However, this is no longer the case, and LagNet now boasts a fast, stable network.
