StarChat is an IRC Network. Founded in 1997 by jinxi, the network once had a population over 3,000 users concurrently. The network still exists today, however the maximum user count has fallen to only 1,500 users.
StarChat was founded for role playing users on DALnet to role play in a more controlled environment, due to problems with users harassing role playing channels on DALnet. Creating a new network allowed jinxi and her fellow operators to keep a better moderation on the network, as well as a friendly place to allow people to role play.
Since 1997, StarChat's population rose many times of the expected size, and provided more channels with other content since then. Notably in 1998, StarChat began providing WebTV users with Chat abilities via a StarChat Web Interface JavaScript applet designed to work with the WebTV chat client software. Along with such technology, a new service was implemented named WebServ, which combined some of the more used services from ChanServ and NickServ. This allowed WebTV users an easy way to use the IRC Services.
The original network ircd was that of DALnet's, modified for StarChat. Since then it has evolved into its own version. Originally, Star6 was planned to be a total rewrite of the software, however due to issues with the development team, Star6 was never completed, and the older IRCd took the place of Star6.
Current IRCd Version: Star6.0.7, Development version 6.1.8. Apparently their versioning technique has been adapted similar to the linux kernel source.
Current Services Version: StarChat Services 1.0.7. The services are for use only on StarChat and remain closed source, though being developed under the GPL license.
StarChat has an administration system based on levels of operability:
Access to various levels of Services commands is granted based on performance and merit.
