Elixir originally comes from exir (اکسیر) in Persian. Exir first entered to Arabic as alexir (الاکسیر) and then transformed to Elixir in English.
Elixir has several meanings:
- Elixir vitae (elixir of life) was given to a potion that could preserve or prolong life.
- An elixir can also be anything that purports to be a sovereign remedy (that is, a remedy that can cure virtually everything). See: Universal panacea
- In the Final Fantasy series of video games, the Elixir is an item that restores both HP (Hit points) and MP (Magic points) completely to the player character it is used by or on. Similarly, the Megalixir (an abbreviation of Mega Elixir) has the same restorative effects on the entire party.
- The Elixir Végétal de la Grande-Chartreuse (Herbal Elixir)
[1] : Made by the Chartreuse Monks since 1737 according to the instructions set out in the secret manuscript given to them by Maréchal d'Estrées in 1605. The Herbal Elixir gets its unique flavour from 130 medicinal and aromatic plants and flowers. It is a cordial, a liqueur and a very effective tonic.
