Pikmin 2 (ピクミン2 in Japanese) is the sequel to Pikmin for the Nintendo GameCube. In Pikmin 2, Captain Olimar returns to the planet with his new assistant, Louie, to find various treasures to bring back to Hocotate. The game was released on August 30, 2004 in the US.
The Pikmin
- Main article: Pikmin (species)
The red, yellow, and blue Pikmin from the previous game return, along with two new colors of Pikmin: purple and white. Unlike the originals, they do not have Onions. Instead, they are created when an existing Pikmin is thrown into a "candypop bud", a type of flower found in the field. There are also Bulbmin, a type of parasitic Pikmin that infects Dwarf Bulborbs. Being in the body of a Dwarf Bulborb protects them from drowning, electrocution, burning, and poisoning. They are only found in caves and will not leave them.
The following are descriptions of the Pikmin, listed in the order in which Olimar or Louie encounters them in the course of normal gameplay.
- Red Pikmin are the first type of Pikmin encountered in the game. They are better fighters than the other types of Pikmin. They fight more strongly, and are more difficult for enemies to shake off. Besides increased fighting ability, red Pikmin have no unusual physical attributes, and run with average speed. Red Pikmin are the only type of Pikmin which are resistant to fire, and the only Pikmin which can fight enemies which either use fire as a primary means of attack, or which are covered with fire. On a physiological note, red Pikmin are the only type of Pikmin who have noses.
- Purple Pikmin are the second type of Pikmin encountered by Captain Olimar and his assistant. Upon landing on the surface of the planet, Olimar and Louie begin to explore the surrounding area. In a cave located on the planet's surface, they find a strange flower, named a Violet Canypop Bud by Captain Olimar, which changes red Pikmin into purple Pikmin, a color of Pikmin not seen in the first Pikmin game. Purple Pikmin can only be acquired by the throwing of other Pikmin colors into Violet Candypop Buds. Because of this, purple Pikmin also have no outside base, or Onion, as possessed by the other three colors of Pikmin (red, yellow, and blue). Purple Pikmin reside overnight in the ship with Captain Olimar and Louie. Purple Pikmin have several interesting physical attributes. Purple Pikmin are ten times as heavy as other types of Pikmin, and are also ten times as strong. Certain areas of the environment require a certain weight of Pikmin to crush obstacles or a certain number of Pikmin to cooperate in order to lift a certain object. In both cases, purple Pikmin count as ten Pikmin towards reaching this goal. Fox example, an object which requires thirty red, yellow, or blue Pikmin to carry only requires three purple Pikmin to move it. Because of their extreme heaviness, purple Pikmin can be used to injure enemies. When purple Pikmin land on the back of an enemy, damage is dealt, and a strategic barrage of purple Pikmin thrown through the air onto an enemy can defeat the enemy quickly, usually before the enemy has an opportunity to counterattack. However, there are drawbacks to the large size of purple Pikmin, they cannot be thrown as high as other Pikmin and run much more slowly than any other type of Pikmin. Regarding their physical appearance, purple Pikmin are the only type of Pikmin who have hair, a few strands of which they possess on top of their heads.
- The third variety of Pikmin encountered by Captain Olimar and Louie are the white Pikmin. These Pikmin, like the purple Pikmin, are originally found in a cave. Another similarity white and purple Pikmin possess is that both colors can only be formed by throwing other colors of Pikmin into Candypop Buds. In this case, white Pikmin are formed by tossing any color of Pikmin into an Ivory Candypop Bud. White Pikmin are smaller than all other types of Pikmin. Their strength is somewhat unusual in the fact that one white Pikmin can carry as much weight as one red, yellow, or blue Pikmin, but white Pikmin are poor fighters, and have difficulty overcoming even small enemies. However, to compensate, white Pikmin have several advanced and unique abilities. Due to their small size, white Pikmin are the fastest of all Pikmin types. Although not strong enough to be proficient fighters, white Pikmin are naturally poisonous to almost all indiginous creatures on the Pikmin's planet. The consuming of even four or five white Pikmin is often enough to kill even large creatures. In addition to these abilities, white Pikmin have large, sensitive, red eyes with which they can sense and locate buried objects. White Pikmin can then begin to dig for these objects. Once the top of the object is exposed, other colors of Pikmin can begin to dig the object up as well. Physiologically, white Pikmin are the only Pikmin who have different eye color, all other Pikmin have black irises with white pupils.
- The fourth type of Pikmin encountered by Captain Olimar is the yellow Pikmin. Yellow Pikmin are on of the three standard types of Pikmin. This means that yellow Pikmin have an Onion, and that they reproduce by normal means for Pikmin, which is to say, the retrieval of nutritious objects from the surrounding area for conversion into Pikmin seeds by the Onion itself. Yellow Pikmin are average fighters, and are resistant to electricity and electric-based attacks. Yellow Pikmin run with average speed, as well. However, due to their abnormally large ears, they are able to be thrown both much further and much higher than other types of Pikmin. Yellow Pikmin are the only Pikmin who have ears.
- The final type of Pikmin Captain Olimar encounters in the game is the blue Pikmin. Blue Pikmin are also one of the standard three types of Pikmin, meaning that they have an Onion as a base and that they reproduce in the normal manner for Pikmin. Blue Pikmin are average fighters, and run at an average speed. However, due to their nose and gills, blue Pikmin are the only type of Pikmin who can swim, or even enter water at all without drowning. Only blue Pikmin have gills.
Bulbmin are only found in the frontier cavern and submerged castle. They are weaker than the purple and red pikmin but are stronger than others. They are resistant to fire, water, electricity, and poison. They can only be leaf or flower-they are not bud. They cannot come back to the surface in a cave.
Story
When Captain Olimar returns home from his "vacation" on the Pikmin Planet, he finds that his company, Hocotate Freight, is in serious debt. They even had to sell the Dolphin (Olimar's ship), which was the only corporate asset worth anything. The bottle cap he brought with him as a souvenir is found to have a value of 100 Pokos. After commenting that this is more than a year's salary, Olimar's boss sends him on a trip with Louie to the Pikmin Planet to scrounge up 10,000 Pokos worth of treasure to get the company back up and running.
Levels
There are cave areas spread between each of the main levels, each level represents one of the four seasons:
The Valley of Repose(boss:Burrowing Snagret) is the first level that is visited in the game. It is winter in this area, so most of it is covered in snow. Players learn most of the basics here, as well as find the red and purple Pikmin. There are three caves in this area, two of which aren't accessible until later in the game:
- Emergence Cave-boss:none
- Subterranean Complex-boss:Man-At-Legs
- Frontier Cavern-boss:Empress Bulblax
The Awakening Wood(boss:Burrowing Snagret) is the second level in the game, and is opened up when an item that appears to be the northern hemisphere of a globe is found. It is spring in this area, and flower petals gently float down. It is also the area where white Pikmin and blue Pikmin (which are inaccessible without yellow Pikmin) are found. This area was formerly known as The Forest of Hope in the first game, though it has changed due to the passage of time. There are four caves in this area:
- Hole of Beasts-boss:Empress Bulblax
- White Flower Garden-boss:Burrowing Snagret
- Bulblax Kingdom-boss:Emperor Bulblax
- Snagret Hole-boss:Pileated Snagret, 4 Burrowing Snagrets
The Perplexing Pool(boss:Beady Long Legs) is the third level in the game, and is opened up when the other hemisphere of the globe is found. It is summer in this area, and the yellow Pikmin can be found here. This area was formerly known as The Distant Spring in the first game, and like the Awakening Wood has changed since its appearance in the original Pikmin. There are four caves in this area:
- Citadel of Spiders-boss:Beady Long Legs
- Glutton's Kitchen-boss:Giant Breadbug
- Shower Room-boss:Ranging Bloyster
- Submerged Castle-boss:Waterwraith
The Wistful Wild is the final level in the game, and is opened up when the player reaches the 10,000 Poko mark. It is autumn in this area, and is one of the most difficult levels in the game. This area contains what was known in the first game as The Impact Site, as well as The Final Trial. There are three caves in this area:
- Cavern of Chaos-boss:2 Emperor Bulblaxes,Segmented Crawbster
- Hole of Heroes-boss:Empress Bulblax, Burrowing Snagret, Beady Long Legs, 2 Emperor Bulblaxes, Pileated Snagret, Ranging Bloyster, Man-At-Legs, Raging Long Legs
- Dream Den-boss:Titan Dweevil
It can be noted that the landing site of Wistful Wild has a Yield sign under it. In the Japanese version, it's a Stop sign (Stop signs in Japan are triangular).

Pikmin 2 e-Reader
In Japan, after the release of Pikmin 2, they had also released e-Reader cards that had contained mini games. Some of these mini games involved the player to pluck all the Pikmin in an area in a set amount of steps, or to try to get Pikmin from one point to another.
These cards were not released outside of Japan, as the e-Reader was not released in Europe, and was discontinued in the United States at the time.
