Ubi Soft surprised us all by announcing they would take U.S. publishing duties for the sequel to the quirky PlayStation platformer as the first was a bit of a sleeper hit. The original game appeared as one of the earlier games for the original PSX, and is one of the few for the console that required the use of both analog sticks. Were glad to see it made across the ocean as the games wacky style...

Ape Escape 2 is a platform game for the PlayStation 2 that is part of the Ape Escape series.

In the game, a boy named Hikaru (Jimmy) along with a baby monkey named Pipotchi and a teenage braniac named Natsumi (Natalie) have to assist the professor in catching monkeys that are wreaking havoc. Kakeru (Spike), the hero of the first game and Hikaru's cousin makes a cameo appearance, but once the player defeats Specter in the final battle, a secret is revealed in which if you hold L1 and Start when starting a new game, the player will play as Kakeru.

The character names are the same as the original Japanese names in the United Kingdom version of the game, but are different in the United States version of the game. Ubi Soft distributes this game in the U.S.

Contents

Freaky Monkey Five

In this game, Specter selected five monkeys and fed them a special fruit called the Vita-Z Banana. This caused them to grow bigger and stronger than the other monkeys, and Hikaru must defeat them individually in lengthy battles. These five monkeys, called the Freaky Monkey Five, are named (in order of game appearance):

  • Blue Monkey (male)
  • Yellow Monkey (male) (fought again later as a giant version of himself due to an "overdose of Vita-Z Bananas")
  • Pink Monkey (female)
  • White Monkey (male)
  • Red Monkey (male)

Note: White Monkey is the only one of the Freaky Monkey Five who does not fight, but rather, is mechanically inclined and builds a robot which Hikaru must destroy before being able to catch White Monkey.

Gadgets

Gadgets are Hikaru's main form of offense and defense.

  • Stun Club- This is Hikaru's basic weapon. It can defeat most enemies in a few hits and can break things and answer help telephones.
  • Monkey Net- This is Hikaru's most important tool. It catches monkeys.
  • Monkey Radar- This device helps Hikaru locate monkeys and find out their statistics.
  • Super Hoop- A hula hoop that allows for Hikaru to travel very fast.
  • Slingback Shooter- A slingshot that fires normal, explosive, and guided pellets.
  • RC Car- This car helps Hikaru attack enemies, collect items, and reach switches from afar. There are 5 different chassis.
  • Sky Flyer- A helicopter-like device that lets you glide for a short while.
  • Bananarang- This boomerang emits a banana-like scent that attracts monkeys.
  • Water Cannon- A water gun that can put out flames and distract monkeys.
  • Electro Magnet- A magnet that can move or attract metal items and remove enemy armor.
  • Magic Punch- This is the ultimate weapon that defeats all enemies in one hit.

Enemies

Yes besides all the different monkeys that use laser guns or bombs on you, Hikaru (Jimmy) will also have to face the common enemies using his various gadgets. Most of the enemies are pigs pixed with poop, but there are different ones as well. All the names of the enemies are taken from the US version of Ape Escape 2
