Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (known as Ganbare Goemon: Neo Momoyama Bakufu no Odori in Japan), is a game that was published and developed by Konami, and was released for the Nintendo 64 in North America by 1998. It is part of the Legend of the Mystical Ninja series (known as Ganbare Goemon in Japan), and is the second of four titles to be released worldwide. In this game, Goemon, along with Ebisumaru, Sasuke and Yae, must stop a new enemy who tries to turn Japan into a dancing place. It is the first game in the series that makes the 2D to 3D transition, having some similarities with The Legend of Zelda series. In 1999, it was followed by a sequel, Goemon's Great Adventure.
There is also a Game Boy game known as Ganbare Goemon: Kurofone Tou no Nazo in Japan. Unlike its console counterpart, the game is reminiscent of Zelda. It is the weakest-selling and the least impressive of the 4 Goemon games released outside of Japan. The story consists of Goemon and company investigating a pirate band. Of the four main characters, only Goemon, Ebisumaru and Sasuke are playable. Yae appears as a non-playable character. Interestingly, the game includes a laugh track at certain points in the game's dialogue. A lot of the game deals with surreal events and mixes a rural Japanese setting with space age technology.
In Europe, the game released wasn't the aforementioned Kurofone Tou No Nazo. Instead it was the game Ganbare Goemon:Sarawareta Ebisumaru!, which was released in the Konami GB Collection Volume 3 (a collection of four Konami games released for the Game Boy) for the Game Boy Color. This game is actually the first game in the series released in a portable system (1991). Only Goemon is playable, and the game consists of him rescuing Ebisumaru; Sasuke and Yae don't make appearances.
