Sumpter was born in Monterey, California to Gary Sumpter and Sandra Johnson. He is the brother of Jessica Sumpter and Gigi Sumpter who are also actresses. He was raised in the small town of Mount Sterling, Kentucky until he was 11. When he moved to Lexington, Kentucky to model, he won IMTA's Pre-Teen Male Model of the Year award in 2000. Soon afterward, he and his family moved to Los Angeles, where he currently resides.
In July 2002, Sumpter, 13, was selected for his breakout role as Peter Pan. During filming (fall of 2002), he grew eight inches (from 5' 00" to 5' 08"). The $140 million production opened December 2003, but did poorly, possibly due to reports of its more 'adult' treatment of the J. M. Barrie story.
Nevertheless, the positive exposure led to a lead role in Clubhouse, a short-lived TV series which co-starred Dean Cain.
Following Clubhouse, Sumpter won the lead role in the Lifetime TV film Cyber Seduction: His Secret Life, playing a high school swimming champion who develops an addiction to online pornography.
Sumpter spent the summer of 2005 in Oregon filming the comedy The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang.
Jeremy Sumpter is 6' 00" tall and weighs 148 lbs (1). He is home-schooled.
Jeremy Sumpter is a gifted athlete. Surfing is one of his greatest loves, and he has surfed all over the world. Sumpter also enjoys basketball, football, baseball, snowboarding, tennis, soccer, hiking, swimming, rollerblading, and golf. Not surprisingly, the young actor has been cast in numerous athletic roles, including Local Boys (surfing), Peter Pan (sword fighting), Clubhouse (baseball), and Cyber Seduction (swimming).
Sumpter's talent came in handy when training for Peter Pan: "I did all my own stunts except one," the actor says. Prior to start of filming, Sumpter says he was practicing sword fighting as much as five hours a day. In addition, he trained in gymnastics and lifted weights. While filming in Australia, he supplemented his training with cricket and surfing. Says Sumpter: "The best thing about being in Australia was that I got to surf the best surf spots in the world."
Sumpter's athletic side is no secret on movie sets. While filming Cyber Seduction, Sumpter entertained fellow young actors by doing hand stands. During The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang, the buff actor showed off his biceps for a photographer.
On January 22, 2004, his autographed Local Boys wetsuit was sold on eBay (Item #3378611795) for $2,226.00.
In October 2005, Sumpter competed in his first celebrity golf tournament: the Eddie Money Golf Tournament in northern California. His team placed 3rd out of 24 teams.
