NBA 2K is a basketball game series that was initially exclusive for the Sega Dreamcast. NBA 2K was Sega's first foray into the basketball game market since the Genesis' heyday; it was also the first title to legitimately challenge EA Sports' NBA Live series for console hoops supremacy. The graphics, animation, sound, and 3D arena-environment in 2K are generally considered far beyond anything gamers had ever seen in a basketball simulation at present.
The success of NBA 2K led to a long-standing series that eventually gained the rights and license to the ESPN brand name. ESPN was used for 2 games before signing a 15-year deal with EA Sports.
The 2K series, developed by Visual Concepts began under the banner of Sega Sports until it was later sold along with Visual Concepts to Take-Two Interactive. The series is currently published by 2K Games, a publishing label started by Take-Two in 2005.
