Star Academy is a highly successful television show format produced by Endemol, that has been licensed in well over a dozen countries. It is a pop music talent contest with viewer voting and reality show elements.
There are many versions of the Star Academy show, each country having its own slight variations, but the basic concept remains the same: contestants live in a boarding-school called "The Academy", managed by a director, and various teachers coach them in singing and dancing lessons. The participants are filmed with hidden cameras throughout the day and night (an idea borrowed from another of Endemol's major reality shows Big Brother). Once a week, a live TV broadcast presents performances from the contestants (usually cover versions of popular songs), as well as recapping their trials and tribulations at The Academy from the past week. The live show will often feature special guest stars, with whom some of the contestants have the opportunity to sing. Based on the judges' verdicts and viewer voting (an idea borrowed from rival musical reality show Pop Idol, the weakest contestant is dropped. The eventual winner is awarded a record deal, or similar prize.
The first country to use the format is somewhat unclear; Endemol produced Star Academy Holland for their home market, but a pilot show was also broadcast in Belgium. It is clear that the first major success in a large market was Operación Triunfo in Spain. This show was also produced by Endemol, and shares all the same elements as Star Academy, so it is reasonable to treat it as part of the same lineage, even though Endemol themselves consider it a separate format.
The Spanish production featured as its prize the opportunity to represent the country in the Eurovision Song Contest. Its success was a platform to launch the format into the rest of the Spanish-speaking world, with versions produced for Argentina, Chile and Mexico.
In France, it was produced under the Star Academy brand, and enjoyed phenomenal success, racking up record ratings and creating numerous new stars including Jenifer Bartoli and Nolwenn Leroy. The equally successful Star Academy Quebec soon followed.
