Stan and Jan Berenstain are best known for creating the children's book series The Berenstain Bears. Janice Grant (born on July 26, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) met Stanley Berenstain (born on September 29, 1923, in Philadelphia; died on November 26, 2005, in Solebury Township, Pennsylvania) on their first day of class at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art in 1941. They married five years later, on April 13, 1946.

They published their first book featuring the family of bears in 1962 and with the help of then-head of children's publishing at Random House Theodore Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss) created a lasting franchise including many more books, television series, toys, and stage productions.

Stan died in 2005 due to complications from cancer at the age of 82.
