Sport compact automobiles are small cars that can be made to run much faster than the factory originally intended. These are usually front wheel drive import cars from Asia, in contrast with European hot hatches. The most common sport compact cars are built by Honda or Nissan, but many other tyes of import cars are also used. These cars usually have an electronic engine management system that can be modified, rechipped or reprogrammed to give more power by disregarding the factory settings that are designed to increase engine life. Modifications of this type allow the cars' engines to run at much higher RPMs than the engines of older v8 muscle cars. This causes them to produce large amounts of horsepower from relatively tiny engines, and gives their exhaust its characteristic buzzing sound.
Tuning
The slang term for such modifications is "tuning". This has given rise to the term "tuner" for the owners of modified sport compacts, and by extension, their automobiles. There is a large market for bolt on performance enhancing equipment that fits small cars of this type. This market also includes a lot of equipment that is cosmetic; i.e. that changes the appearance of the vehicle. Many self described "tuners" spend more money on spoilers, ground effects, neon packages, loud stereos, large rims with low profile tires and other style/image products than they do on performance enhancing modifications. Large stickers - often of kanji - and bright graphics are typically used. This common practice of focusing on appearance instead of performance has made the term "tuner" a pejorative in some circles, although it ought not be used in that manner; a properly tuned sport compact can be a very effective race car.
Motorsports
Tiny cars with high horsepower are can be formidable racing vehicles, and racing sport compact cars has become so popular that the NHRA now has a special class for sport compact racing. Some of the highly modified sport compact dragsters can run the quarter mile in less than eight seconds. Sport compact cars are also the prefered cars for the relatively new motorsport of "drifting".
Market Trends
Sport compacts are one of the fastest growing segments of the performance car market. Manufacturers such as honda, nissan and subaru have begun producing cars that already fit the "sport compact" moniker without modification. Manufacturers of automobiles in the USA have not been oblivious to the to the sport compact trend. General Motors has responded with a new EcoTec four cylinder engine which is designed specifically for tuning and capable of being modified until it produces 1000 hp. They offer this engine in their sporty Saturn Ion Redline and Chevy Cobalt. Ford offers many bolt-on performance parts for the Ford Focus compact car.
