Wikipedia-Article "The Theatre"

This article is about one specific theatre in London; for information on theatres in general, see Theater.

The Theatre was an Elizabethan playhouse located in Shoreditch, just outside the City of London. It was built in 1576 by the actor James Burbage in the grounds of a former priory that had been dissolved. The theatre is thought to have been a circular building, with an open central pit and galleries.

James' accomplished son, Richard Burbage, and his company of players, The Chamberlain's Men, gradually became the best-known theatre company in London, and acquired William Shakespeare as their leading playwright. The lease on the land on which The Theatre was built was due to expire in 1599, shortly after James Burbage died. Richard and the company solved this problem by taking the theatre apart, and transporting the timber across the river, rebuilding it on a new site in Bankside. This new theatre was renamed the Globe Theatre.
