Hilltop view over Iringa town.
Iringa is a town in Tanzania with a population of 112,900 (as of 2004). It is situated at a latitude of 7.77°S and longitude of 35.69°E. It is also the name of the Iringa Region and Iringa Urban and Iringa Rural districts. The name is derived from the Hehe word lilinga, meaning fort. The fortress and headquarters of Chief Mkwawa was situated in the nearby village of Kalenga during the 1890s.
Iriga has a very pleasant climate and one of the most endearing aspects of the town is its main street - the town's commercial hub is the street. If you were to stand at either end of the street you can see the other end of the town.
