The town of Batticaloa is the provincial capital of the eastern province of Sri Lanka. It is on the east coast, 314 Km from Colombo. The population of 86,742 consists mainly of Tamils and Moors, with a minority Sinhalese population. The town is claimed by the LTTE as part of their Tamil Homeland, Eelam.
