Richard Hoagland is a propounder of theories on astronomical topics that are considered offbeat by many. His major focus is on extraterrestrial life in the solar system, in particular Mars. While Hoagland's books have sold very well, most in the scientific establishment consider his theories to be mere pseudoscience and not to be taken seriously.

Career

Hoagland claims to have been a "Curator of Astronomy & Space Science" at the "Springfield Museum of Science" (Springfield Science Museum) located at The Quadrangle in Springfield, Massachusetts, and a science adviser to Walter Cronkite and CBS News during the Apollo program. His website states that he has "served as an official NASA consultant to the Goddard Space Flight Center." [1][2][3]

He also claims to have been nominated for a Peabody Award (for radio coverage of the Mariner 4 probe) and to have been awarded the "International Angstrom Medal for Excellence in Science" in 1993. [4]

Theories

Hoagland has made numerous claims about the existence of extraterrestrial life (or intelligence, at some point), which he believes is supported by the presence of the so-called Face on Mars. He claims that the face was part of a city built on Cydonia Planitia by extraterrestrial intelligences. The "city" apparently consists of very large pyramids and mounds arranged in a geometrical pattern, with the ratios between measured angles roughly equaling mathematical constants like pi, e and the square root of two. Hoagland's numerous theories are also frequently supported by numerological justifications, such as his Iapetus theory revolving around Base 60 and the numeric factors of platonic solids.

Hoagland has appeared on CNN, the BBC, UFO Evidence & Conspiracy, Mysteries in Space, and is a frequent guest on Coast to Coast AM, often interviewed by George Noory.

Some of his better-known theories include:

  • The Face on Mars is an alien construct
  • There is a Martian City at Cydonia
  • Numerous rocks surrounding the landing sites of the Mars Exploration Rovers are in fact pieces of alien machinery. [5]
  • Rocks on Mars containing biological fossils were purposefully destroyed by NASA's rover.
  • The true color of Mars is salmon with patches of green plant life. Photos showing a red Mars are NASA coverups.
  • Hyperdimensional physics
  • There is a "hyperdimensional point" on the Ross Ice Shelf
  • The United States government has covered up the presence of extraterrestrials
  • The Space Agency murdered the Apollo 1 astronauts
  • The Saturnian moon Iapetus is an artificial world. [6]
  • The Galileo spacecraft, which burnt up in Jupiter's atmosphere, caused a mysterious black spot due to its nuclear payload
  • Travel to Mars is a "well documented interest of the Bush family". [7][8]
  • The Face on Mars is an indication of a Human/Feline hybrid design found in ancient Earth civilization, and knowledge of its existence is being suppressed by NASA. [9].
  • NASA is also suppressing knowledge of an ancient civilization on the Moon. The advanced technology of this civilization is "lying around on the Moon's surface."
  • Additionally, that NASA denies there are large semi-transparent structures constructed of glass on the lunar surface discovered during the Apollo missions. [10]
  • The Arecibo message was intentionally altered by author Carl Sagan. [11]
  • The 9/11 attacks were part of an astrological Masonic conspiracy. [12][13]
  • A conspiracy is masterminded from the basement of various Old Navy stores
  • Federal agencies such as FEMA, NASA, and the US government are linked to Freemasonry. [14][15][16][17]

Hoagland has also claimed responsibility for the theory concerning the presence of water on Jupiter's moon Europa. However, several scientific articles about this subject were written years before Hoagland's article was published.

"Enterprise Mission" website

This site has material relating to Mars, including photos that show the Face, anomalous features that appear to be buildings, and the like. Other matters covered on the website are NASA-related conspiracies, theories of hyperdimensional physics, UFOs and/or alien related matters, the solar system, and data concerning Jupiter's satellite Europa.

Criticism

In May 1997, he claimed on the Art Bell radio show that NASA murdered the Apollo 1 astronauts Grissom, White and Chaffee. This claim, unchallenged by Art Bell, seems to have been based on nothing other than a misunderstanding of a remark by Betty Grissom.

Bell (and now his successor George Noory) give Hoagland hours of air time on the public media, which he frequently uses to ask for financial contributions from the public -- with what success nobody but him knows, since his organization is not a public corporation and is not audited in any way.
