Sarasota is a city located in Sarasota County, Florida, USA. It is on the Central-West coast of Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 52,715. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 54,349 [1]. It is the county seat of Sarasota County.GR6
There is an important disntiction between the City of Sarasota and what is percieved as Sarasota. The majority of people living in what is understood as Sarasota live in the unincorperated parts of Sarasota County.
Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium and Marie Selby Botanical Gardens are some of Sarasota's notable attractions, as well as the Ringling Museum of Art, Florida state art museum. Ringling Circus made its winter home here.
Colleges in Sarasota include New College of Florida, a highly competitive public liberal arts college, the Ringling School of Art and Design, a school of art, music, and design, and the Sarasota campus of the University of South Florida. Some two-year colleges include the Sarasota County Technical Institute and the Keiser College of Sarasota.
This city is home to the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, which also serves Bradenton, Florida. The local television affiliates are WWSB, which airs ABC programming, along with a 24/7 local news operation ran by Comcast and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune branded as SNN 6. Sarasota is also home to Ed Smith Stadium, where the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati's MLB team, trains in spring for the upcoming baseball season, and is also home to the minor league Sarasota Reds.
Sarasota is home to the Mote Marine Laboratory, a premier marine rescue, research, and aquarium.
On September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush was in Sarasota when the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists. He was at Emma E. Booker Elementary school at the time.
Sarasota has also been in the spotlight from the Carlie Brucia kidnapping in 2004 and the murder of Nancy Campbell-Panitz in 2000. Also, in 1991, actor Paul Reubens was arrested for lewd conduct in an adult movie theater, which ultimately led to the demise of his then-popular persona "Pee-Wee Herman".

Sarasota is located at 27°20'14" North, 82°32'7" West (27.337273, -82.535318)GR1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 67.2 km² (25.9 mi²). 38.6 km² (14.9 mi²) of it is land and 28.6 km² (11.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 42.58% water.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there are 52,715 people, 23,427 households, and 12,064 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,366.9/km² (3,539.8/mi²). There are 26,898 housing units at an average density of 697.5/km² (1,806.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 76.91% White, 16.02% African American, 0.35% Native American, 1.02% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 3.74% from other races, and 1.91% from two or more races. 11.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 23,427 households out of which 19.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.3% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 48.5% are non-families. 38.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.12 and the average family size is 2.81.
In the city the population is spread out with 18.4% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $34,077, and the median income for a family is $40,398. Males have a median income of $26,604 versus $23,510 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,197. 16.7% of the population and 12.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
