Albany is an ancient and literary Celtic name for Scotland, north of the Firth of Forth (east) and Firth of Clyde (west). Variants are Alban, Albin, Alba and Albion. Other uses probably derive from this. It is unclear whether these toponyms have the same etymon as the Balkan Albania or the ancient Caucasian Albania (see Origin and history of the name Albania).
Today, Albany refers most commonly to Albany, New York, the capital of the U.S. state of New York. It is also the name of many other cities; in addition, there are a number of places named New Albany.
